Stages of Awakening Pure Love of God Within the Heart
In the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.4.15-16) Srila Rupa Goswami has written:
ādau śraddhā tataḥ sādhu-
saṅgo 'tha bhajana-kriyā
tato 'nartha-nivṛttiḥ syāt
tato niṣṭhā rucis tataḥ
athāsaktis tato bhāvas
tataḥ premābhyudañcati
sādhakānām ayaṁ premṇaḥ
prādurbhāve bhavet kramaḥ
"In the beginning there must be faith. Then one becomes interested in associating with pure devotees. Thereafter one is initiated by the spiritual master and executes the regulative principles under his orders. Thus one is freed from all unwanted habits and becomes firmly fixed in devotional service. Thereafter, one develops taste and attachment. This is the way of sādhana-bhakti, the execution of devotional service according to the regulative principles. Gradually emotions intensify, and finally there is an awakening of love. This is the gradual development of love of Godhead for the devotee interested in Kṛṣṇa consciousness."
So we start off having faith in the process of spiritual awakening. Then we associate with devotees and take initiation from the bona fide spiritual master taking his instructions as our very life and soul. These first three steps are foundation upon which we gradually awaken pure love for Krishna within our hearts.

While it is true that we are very small and insignificant, after our rotating through millions of forms in the lower species of life this human is a most rare and priceless opportunity to escape the cycle of birth and death and regain our original identities as eternal servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His transcendental kingdom where birth, death, old age, and disease are conspicuous by their absence. This is accomplished by the association of the Lord's devotees and by taking complete shelter of the bona fide spiritual master. Are you ready to take this most important step?
