Make the World a Better Place

The world is such a horrible mess right now that any decent, compassionate person will naturally want to do something to make the world a better place. Unfortunately no one realizes what the world actually needs to become rectified. Therefore in spite of so many sincere efforts by persons who truly want to make the world a better place our planet still remains a disaster area. It is only when one understands the basic underlying problem, which is the root of all problems, is our disconnection from God, that one can actually, factually do something to make the world a better place. This is the mission of the Krishna consciousness movement. To bring God back to center of our global society.

Question: Meat Eating Allowed?

My Dearest Guru Maharaja,
Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Please by your unlimited mercy and kindness help me to understand.

I had some Jehovah witnesses come to my residence today.
I tried to explain to them that it was a sin to eat meat and that it was written in the Bible that " thou shalt not kill."
Their reply was that Jesus ate lamb every year on Passover and therefore it was okay.

I thought to myself that perhaps this was allowed for ceremonial reasons but was not quite sure how to respond.
Please tell me how I should respond in the future as I am quite sure that to eat meat is sinful. Also, I was looking up the Bible to see what commandment it was that " thou shall not kill." I was horrified to see on the internet that the phase had been relaxed to " thou shalt not kill humans." Surely this is a sign of the degradation of Kali Yuga

Answer: Meat is Murder

From: Sri Mayapur Dhama, India

My Dear Bhakta Das,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

You could have asked them if they limited their meat consumption to only taking lamb once a year on Passover and immediately they would have been defeated.

The Vedas give some allowance for meat eaters. They are allowed to kill a goat once a month on the dark moon night.
But they have to whisper a mantra in the goats ear that now I am killing you and the next life you will be killing me. The idea is to convince the meat eater to give up his sinful habit. Srila Prabhupada explains this as follows:

"It is very difficult for one to give up his attachments all at once. If one is addicted to meat-eating and is suddenly told that he must not eat meat, he cannot do so. If one is attached to drinking liquor and is suddenly told that liquor is no good, he cannot accept this advice. Therefore, in the Puranas we find certain instructions that say in essence, 'All right, if you want to eat meat, just worship the goddess Kali and sacrifice a goat for her. Only then can you eat meat. You cannot eat meat just by purchasing it from the butcher shop. No, there must be sacrifice or restriction.' In order to sacrifice a goat to the goddess Kali, one must make arrangements for a certain date and utilize certain paraphernalia. That type of puja, or worship, is allowed on the night of the dark moon, which means once a month. There are also certain mantras to be chanted when the goat is sacrificed. The goat is told, 'Your life is being sacrificed before the goddess Kali; you will therefore be immediately promoted to the human form.' Generally, in order to attain the human form, a living entity has to pass through many species of life on the evolutionary scale, but if a goat is sacrificed to the goddess Kali, he is immediately promoted to the human form. The mantra also says, 'You have the right to kill this man who is sacrificing you.' The word mamsa indicates that in his next birth, the goat will eat the flesh of the man who is presently sacrificing him. This in itself should bring the goat-eater to his senses. He should consider, 'Why am I eating this flesh? Why am I doing this? I'll have to repay with my own flesh in another life.' The whole idea is to discourage one from eating meat."

Meat is murder. The conclusion is that meat eating in sinful even for ceremonial purposes, if the animal is killed. Srila Prabhupada mentions that the meat eaters can avoid the sinful of killing the animals by waiting until the animal dies naturally and then eating his flesh.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
