We All Make Mistakes
We all have the defect of making mistakes. For example, in India Mahatma Gandhi was considered to be a very great personality, but he committed many mistakes. Even at the last stage of his life, his assistant warned, "Mahatma Gandhi, don't go to the New Delhi meeting. I have some friends, and I have heard there is danger." But he did not hear. He persisted in going and was killed. Even great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, President Kennedy -- there are so many of them -- make mistakes. To err is human. This is one defect of the conditioned soul.
This is why instead of speculating and basing our knowledge on information gleaned through our imperfect sense we have take knowledge from the authoritative source of Vedic wisdom so that we don't make the mistake of thinking, speaking, and acting in such a way that is not beneficial for our ultimate welfare.

I have some questions:
I want to start chanting sixteen rounds of japa mala. So what type of beads should I purchase? Is there a specific kind?
Since I don't want my family to know about this as they think its a waste of time can I do the chanting without having a deity?
What is the ideal time to chant?
This question is personal like how do you feel after chanting and how much time it takes to start feeling serenity?
These are so many questions, but I would be highly obliged if you can kindly answer them to help me become solidly situated in Krishna consciousness.
Thank you very much.
My Dear Devotee,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Tulasi beads are very nice. Neem is also good.

Answer: Blissful
From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USAMy Dear Devotee,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

No murti is required. Krishna is appearing in the form of His holy names.
Before sunrise is the best time to chant, but we can chant 24 hours daily.
Chanting makes me feel blissful. You can taste instant bliss if you will chant to Krishna with love begging Him to engage you in His pure devotional service.
I hope this meets you in the best of health.
