Conquering Over Depression

At the present time in our modern day world depression is a leading cause of both physical and mental disorder. It is so bad that the World Health Organization has predicted that by 2030 depression will account for the highest level of disability accorded any physical or mental disorder in the world.

Depression is not new. It was experienced in the ancient times as well. But the ancients knew how to conquer it. We don't.

For example, once upon a time many thousands of years ago just prior to her marriage to Lord Krishna Princess Rukmini became exceedingly depressed. Out of compassion Lord Balarama instructed her, "With transcendental knowledge dispel the grief that is weakening and confounding your mind. Please resume your natural mood, O princess of the pristine smile." Balarama's advice was accepted by Rukmini. Thus enlightened by Lord Balarama, slender Rukmini forgot her depression and steadied her mind by spiritual intelligence. There are many such examples in the Vedic literature. Arjuna conquered depression by hearing from Lord Krishna. Srila Vyasadeva conquered depression by hearing from Narada Muni. This list goes on and on and on.

So from the Vedic history we should learn our lesson that depression is conquered by transcendental knowledge. We pray that the whole world will now wake up to this understanding of how to conquer depression.

The Great Blessing of Sri Vrindavana Dhama

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Give to the Needy or to the Temple?

Hare Krishna respected, Gurudeva.
Please accept my humble obeisances

Recently we are being asked to offer pure ghee for the cooking at ISCON kitchen. Sometimes we see very needy mothers and children starving on the streets. I feel so much pity for them, that I personally feel that I should give the food ingredients to them instead. After all Krishna resides in their hearts too. And He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He doesn't require anything.

What should I do? Offer at the temple or give to the needy? Please clear my doubt.

Thank you,
Rashmi

Answer: Give to Temple or Distribute Prasadam to the Poor

From: Sri Vrindavan Dhama

My Dear Rashmi,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

If you distribute already prepared foodstuffs which have been offered to Krishna to the poor people, that will be first class service. They will receive the blessing of Krishna prasadam. Do not give them ingredients for their own cooking because they will not offer their food to Krishna and will be
thus eating only sin, and you will get a bad karmic reaction. But if you give them prasadam, they will benefit, and you will also greatly benefit. Krishna will bless both you and them.

If you are not able to distribute prasadam to the poor, you should give ghee to the temple and let the temple do the prasadam distribution. This will greatly benefit you and others.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
