Nuclear War Cannot Stop the Sankirtan Movement
Sometimes it is questioned if nuclear war can stop the sankirtan movement. Here is what Srila Prabhuapda says regarding this issue:
"You have asked about whether nuclear devastation on this planet would effect the Sankirtana Movement. No, there is nothing that can stop the Sankirtana Movement because it is the will of God Himself, Lord Caitanya, that His Holy Name be heard in every town and village. Neither can the demons devastate this planet independent of the will of Krishna. Nothing happens without His sanction. If Krishna wants to kill someone no one can save Him, and if Krishna wants to save someone no one can kill him. For our parts we should just be determined to carry out our mission against all opposition, demons, nuclear war, whatever. The whole universe is finally subject to certain annihilation by the will of Krishna, but devotional service is eternal and is the only certain way one can save himself from devastation. We can preach all over the world that the only way to be saved from collective and individual devastation is to take to the chanting of Hare Krishna. In short, this material world is a very precarious place therefore we should always chant Hare Krishna and seek Krishna's protection."
This is a from a letter from Srila Prabhuapda to Makhanlala Das written on 22 June 1973 while Srila Prabhupada was in Mayapur.
Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Gurudeva.
Dear Srila Gurudeva. Why suffering is so good in spiritual life? What about happiness? Can devotees of the God be happy? Why for example some Christian saints purposefully caused themselves suffering? In Krishna stories there is also some this kind of stories? Why is that? Why cant we love God when we are healthy and happy?
I feel that if I get too much suffering I easily give up life. So, if I get too much suffering, I will give up living. Is life opposite to spiritual life? Can one live healthily and happily and be spiritual?
Much spiritual happiness, sincerely,
Your sincere servant

Answer: Material Suffering Helps Us to Surrender to Krishna
When we are materially happy we tend to forget God, feeling that we do not need Him. But when a pious person is distressed he naturally turns to God for help. This is why great spiritualists appreciate the great benefit of suffering. Or course, it is not that such great spiritualists are actually suffering. Rather they are relishing the unlimited bliss of purely loving God in all conditions of so-called happiness and distress. For them both material happiness and distress are coverings of the unlimited bliss of fully surrendering oneself to Krishna or God.Sankarshan Das Adhikari
