Question: Why Chant with a Bead Bag?

Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet.

It is a great privilege for us that because of you we have got such a forum where all our doubts get cleared. I know that my doubt is an insignificant one, but still I am haunted by this question whenever I sit for chanting. My question is: Why do we use a chanting bag? Cannot we chant only on beads without the bag? Is there any compulsion that chanting beads should always be in a chanting bag. I understand that while travelling it becomes easy to be carry the beads when they are in a bag. But when at home is it required?

Answer: Following in Srila Prabhupada's Footsteps

We always see that Krishna's topmost pure devotee, Srila Prabhupada, chanted with a bead bag. So why we should think of doing something different? Srila Prabhupada explained why we keep the beads in a bag in a radio interview he gave on 12 March 1968 in San Francisco:

"So the beads are supposed to be sacred and therefore we keep it in a bag so that it may not touch the dust or any other impurities."

He explained once in a Srimad Bhagavatam class:

"So, this is our process. We have got this bead bag, and within this bag there is bead, and we capture each bead and chant:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare"

So, the conclusion is that we are meant to follow in the footsteps of our great Founder-Acharya and chant using a bead bag.

Heart Melting Reunion with Amarendra and Gayatri

On Friday 26 June 2015 I was blessed with the greatest good fortune of meeting with two of the dearest devotees of my entire life, His Grace Amarendra Prabhu and his good wife, Srimati Gayatri devi dasi. I am eternally indebted to these great souls for how much they helped me in my spiritual life when I was a young devotee.
