We Must Learn the Art of How to Conquer Our Minds

Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 6, Verse 7 offers a very profound insight as to how we can attain perfect peace of mind. Here is that verse with its translation and most enlightening purport by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhpada:

jitātmanaḥ praśāntasya
paramātmā samāhitaḥ
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣu
tathā mānāpamānayoḥ

TRANSLATION
For one who has conquered the mind, the Supersoul is already reached, for he has attained tranquillity. To such a man happiness and distress, heat and cold, honor and dishonor are all the same.

PURPORT
Actually, every living entity is intended to abide by the dictation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is seated in everyone's heart as Paramātmā. When the mind is misled by the external, illusory energy, one becomes entangled in material activities. Therefore, as soon as one's mind is controlled through one of the yoga systems, one should be considered to have already reached the destination. One has to abide by superior dictation. When one's mind is fixed on the superior nature, he has no alternative but to follow the dictation of the Supreme. The mind must admit some superior dictation and follow it. The effect of controlling the mind is that one automatically follows the dictation of the Paramātmā, or Supersoul. Because this transcendental position is at once achieved by one who is in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the devotee of the Lord is unaffected by the dualities of material existence, namely distress and happiness, cold and heat, etc. This state is practical samādhi, or absorption in the Supreme.

From this wonderful verse and purport we can understand that we must learn now to conquer our minds by keeping them always absorbed in thoughts of Krishna. Our tendency is to let our minds be like monkeys jumping here and there for sense gratification. But this will never make us happy. The only way we can be truly happy is to keep our minds always fixed in Krishna consciousness.

Question: Relationship with a Non-devotee?

Hare Krishna pranam
Please accept my humble obeisance.

My question is, if a devotee goes into a relationship with a non-devotee, does it harm the devotee or his devotion? If that non-devotee says, I will also become a devotee later I am not able to do bhakti now because I am studying abroad, so I am not able to do bhakti now due to the inconvenience of my food and drink.

Forgive me if I have said something wrong.

My Dear N.,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Trust no future, however pleasant. If he does not want to practice Krishna consciousness now, he will not do it in the future. If he was serious about Krishna consciousness he could begin now even while studying abroad. He could be chanting japa mala every day and reading Srila Prabhupada's books. That he is not willing to begin bhakti now means that such a relationship will be detrimental for your Krishna consciousness.

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
Your ever well-wisher,
