Question: Is Shivaloka in the Spiritual Sky?

Is it wrong to worship Lord Shiva and Parvati Devi?

Recently I have been to Mayapur and I was told that Shivaloka is also in the spiritual sky. Do the worshipers of Shiva after attaining the spiritual sky again fall down in the material world or do they enjoy their own pastimes with Lord Shiva?

R.C.

Answer: In Between the Material and Spiritual Worlds

All pure devotees, including Lord Shiva and Parvati Devi, are worshippable by us. However we do not make the mistake of worshipping Lord Shiva as God, as the Shaivites, the followers of Lord, do. This is an offense against the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna.

Sometimes Shivaloka (also known as Mahesh-dhama) is described as the being in the spiritual world. But its actual position is marginal. It is situated in between Devi-dhama, the material world, and the spiritual world, Hari-dhama. This is elaborately described by Srila Prabhupada in his Caitanya Caritamrita Madhya 21.54 purport as follows:

"When a living entity is liberated from Devi-dhama but does not know of the opulence of Hari-dhama, he is placed in Mahesh-dhama, which is between the other two dhamas. The liberated soul does not get an opportunity to serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead there; therefore although this Mahesh-dhama is Lord Siva's dhama and above Devi-dhama, it is not the spiritual world. The spiritual world begins with Hari-dhama, or Vaikunthaloka."

So the worshippers of Lord Shiva do not attain the spiritual sky. Shivaloka is a destination for the impersonalists and voidists from which they fall back down again into material existence after some time. Those who are truly devoted to Lord Shiva will become devotees of his master, Lord Krishna, and go back to home, back to Godhead to associate with and serve Lord Krishna eternally in His divine pastimes.
