How to Discover God

Srila Prabhupada wonderfully describes how to discover God:

"Just try to understand. For instance, I am caused by my father; my father is caused by his father; he is caused by his father, who is caused by his father. In this way, if you go on searching, then you'll ultimately come to someone who is the cause that has no cause. Anadir adir govindah: [Brahma samhita. 5.1] The cause that has no cause is Govinda-Krishna. I may be the cause of my son, but at the same time I am the result of another cause (my father). But the Vedic literatures say that Krishna is the original person; He has no cause. That is Krishna."

So when someone claims that there is no God, ask them, "But do you have a father?" If they say, "Yes", then ask them if their father has a father. In this way explain to them that when you go back, back, back until find a father who has no father you have discovered God.

If someone, atheist or otherwise, is a sincere seeker of truth, this explanation will appeal to them. Those who reject this argument are not open minded. They have a prejudicial agenda to maintain their own position as the so-called center of the universe. In other words, they are asuras, demoniac men.

Question: What Kind of Religion Are We?

Very often during book distribution people ask what kind of religion are we. I would tell them we are not a religious sect but a movement dedicating to awaken the love of God and make everybody happy etc. Then usually some people will still ask something like, "So after all what kind of religion is that?" I do not know how to deal with this situation. Some devotees will say, "If you want, you can regard it as Hinduism", but it seems to me not the best way to deal with this situation. How to explain to people clearly on this? Especially for those whose minds are deeply affected by concepts of sects and divisions?

Answer: The Essence of All Religion

Tell them that we are teaching the essence of all religions, to become a pure lover of God. Tell them that just as there is only sun in the sky, although it has many different names in many different languages, there is also only religion, to be a pure lover of God, although that one religion has many names such as Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, etc.
