Question: Is Offensive Chanting Useless?

Hare Krishna, Dear Gurudeva,
Dandavat pranam!

It is said even if one unintentionally or jokingly chants, he gets benefits. It is also said if one chants with offenses or inattentively, it is useless. These two statements appear ambiguous, please enlighten.

Vignesh Arumuga Chelvan

Answer: It Is a Natural Stage for a Beginner

My Dear Vignesh,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada stated in an initiation lecture:

"The first stage is chanting with offenses. That is natural, because nobody is expert. The second stage is without offenses. When one can chant without offenses, then he becomes liberated. And the third stage is
to achieve in the transcendental platform in the loving service of the Lord. So this chanting of Hare Krishna is so powerful that it will gradually elevate you to the highest position."

So I don't where you heard that chanting with offenses is useless. It is a natural stage we neophytes go through to come to the stage of pure chanting. In this regard Srila Prabhupada warned us in a letter written on 7 November 1972 from Vrindavan:

"...just like in our ISKCON there are so many false things: 'Prabhupada said this, Prabhupada said that.'…Do not be deviated by such ideas."

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.
