Our Mission is to Save the World

Our Mission is to Save the World
At the present moment the whole world is in a state of ever-increasing turmoil simply because the people are lacking Krishna consciousness. Just as when you water the leaves and branches of a tree without watering its root the root the tree will unnecessarily suffer, in a similar way because we are not putting God in the center of the human society the entire world population is in a suffering condition. This is why our mission, as members of the Krishna consciousness movement, is to put Krishna or God back into the center of the human society where He belongs. When this is done, this entire planet earth will be transformed into a spiritual planet in which everyone tastes and realizes the highest happiness.

Question: Should Devotees Get Involved in Politics

My Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All glories to you and to Gurumata.

Some follow-ups to my question from this morning's class:

You had said there is value in pious laws even if the population is not very much Krishna conscious. So how involved should devotees be in politics at the present time? For example, I hear of many devotees supporting one political party or another because a candidate may ostensibly support a policy against some illicit activity, even if that candidate openly participates in many abominable things and does not speak about Krishna consciousness much at all.

I am reading where Srila Prabhupada said that he never voted. So should devotees concern themselves with voting or campaigning for any present-day politicians? Should I register to vote, even if Srila Prabhupada never voted? I am currently not registered.

Also, in the purport to SB 1.11.19, Srila Prabhupada seems to discourage full prohibition of prostitution and intoxication. Of course, devotees should avoid all intoxication and illicit sex, but how to understand this in terms of general governance?

I know that Srila Prabhupada initially encouraged the In God We Trust party, but he later instructed to dissolve the party. Kindly enlighten me on these points, as this is all very bewildering to me. Hare Krishna.

Your eternal servant,

Bhakta Jesse

Answer: No

My Dear Bhakta Jesse,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

None of the modern day political parties are worth supporting. The "In God We Trust" political party started under Srila Prabhupada's guidance had to be stopped because if a church organizes or supports a political party, it will lose its tax exempt status and have to pay taxes on the donations it receives.

Since there will always be a class of men who desire liquor and prostitutes it is better that they are available under strict government regulation rather than being offered in a free open market for prostitutes and liquor. In this way the availability of prostitutes and liquor will be minimized or restricted rather than becoming widespread.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.
