If you eat foods which have been sanctified by having been offered to Lord Sri Krishna with love and devotion, you become purified. Such foods are called "prasadam," which means "mercy" because they are indeed a manifestation of the loving mercy of Krishna (God) upon us. On the other hand if you eat foods, even vegetarian foods, which have not been offered to God with love and devotion, you are eating sin and you will get a bad karmic reaction.
